Sex with a virgin will cure HIV/AIDS and the younger the virgin, the more potent the cure.This myth has stolen the innocence many young girls. South Africa also has one of the highest rates of rape in the world and studies show that 15% of these girls are under the age of 11; 26% of these girls were between the ages of 12-17. This means that around 41% of the rapes committed in South Africa were against minors. It is key to remember that these statistics only show the rapes that were reported, and there are potentially thousands of other rape victims who did not report the crime.
False knowledge on HIV/AIDS treatment and management is not new in South Africa. Former health minister of South Africa, Dr. Manto Tshabalala-Msimang was known for advocating what was known as the beetroot-garlic-lemon diet as a cure for AIDS. Furthermore, she also suggested that AIDS was not caused by HIV. As Westerners, we know that sex with virgins will not cure AIDS, however, in South Africa, proper HIV/AIDS education is seriously lacking, and in desperation people tend to believe whatever they are told. DeleteImagine the farmers and village people who are not near cities with health clinics or HIV/AIDS education. They go to their local "doctors" who tell them that "sex with a virgin will cure" their disease. This only continues to cause a vicious cycle of rape and then in time the passing on the virus to offspring. It's also very distressing to think that the former health minister of South Africa advocated a dietary cure as opposed to education on preventative measures, treatment and transmission prevention. I agree with you that there needs to be more of an effort to disclaim the myths surrounding the virus.
ReplyDeleteI agree that along with spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS, steps should also be taken towards raising awareness about the diseases and danger that will occur while they think they are being 'cured'. Obviously they do not know that they are causing more chaos and spreading diseases rather than putting a stop to them. Innocent people (more than likely young girls) are getting hurt and torn because of this myth and false knowledge going around.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe that some people actually believe that sleeping with a virgin will "cure" them of this awful disease. Education in 3rd world countries on health issues is definitely something worth addressing. A school doesn't need to be built and teachers don't need to be hired or paid, but doctors who are volunteers and willing go to South Africa to aid the children and adults in need should try to go out of their way to educate the locals on the reality of HIV/AIDs. For example, although one may be a virgin, they could easy be born with HIV/AIDs if the disease was active in the mothers body. It's a sad but true reality that not every country in the world is as educated as westernized countries but aiming to educate those less fortunate than ourselves is definitely a good goal.

Prevention through education is key, as well as treatment to those who have already contracted the disease. It is imperative to spread this education to places in need, like Africa. This can help stop the spread of AIDS and if used widespread and properly it could terminate AIDS sometime in the future. However, creating funding for the treatment for Africans with AIDS brings up a new question. With all of the people in our own country suffering from HIV/AIDS, who do we focus on helping first due to limited funding? Just in Baltimore City alone, thousands of people are suffering without any help or treatment, and have contracted it through rape, etc. All over our country we are having the same problems with AIDS and rape, maybe not as severe, but more than our resources to handle. Where should our efforts go as a country?
