"Want a Job?"

Children dying all around, malnutrition, lack of water, no sanitation, and no stable home if there is a home at all. An estimated 1.2 billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day and numbers keep increasing. Poverty is an unpreventable evil that aids the “industry” of slavery. However poverty needs to be recognized in order to be reduced. Poverty is the crucial issue associated with people being susceptible to enslavement; therefore, efforts must be devoted to programs that focus on improving poverty and thus addressing slavery.

The desire for a job is what captures many of those who are enslaved today. The simple question “Want a job?” is presented to a person and thus the pain begins. In Kevin Bales novel Ending Slavery the story of 12 boys in poverty from Bochi, India is told. The parents of the boys are presented with the infamous question “Want a job?” they see it as either take this opportunity or let our children die a horrible death. They unintentional enslaved their sons, yet they have also saved their lives.

925 million. 925 million people in the world are living in hunger. This is not because there is a shortage of food but because; the food cannot be afforded. It is our duty to find a way to aid this world crisis. Food is a necessity . If one doesn’t eat for a certain time, one will die. The fear of death leaves people weak, willing to do anything for food. This is how it becomes effortless for a trafficker to take slaves, because they come when you are in need of help.

Poverty is a universal issue that needs to be addressed. We have organizations already established to do just that, yet it is not being done. World leaders to take action, I need to take action as well as you. If less people were living in poverty, they would be less vulnerable to fall into slavery.

  2. Some people live by the philosophy that our situation is a direct result of the choices we make. While I agree that our actions have direct consequence, I strongly believe that those tricked into slavery are not to blame for their captivity. Many people who are approached with these three words are usually under the impression that they are being offered legitimate work (which is not the case). Addressing poverty will definitely lessen the number of people desperate enough to willingly accept these shady offers - but it will not help those who are slaves as a result of deceit. Addressing those who are tricking people into these awful conditions and creating extremely severe consequences for them will reduce the number of those willing to offer the same shady jobs, which ultimately will lessen the number of people being enslaved as well. How is this to be done? No one seems to have an answer to this question.

  3. You have summarized what I wrote? If there are less people in the world living in poverty, less people will be tricked into slavery. Correct, that is what I said. However undermining those who are enslaved by being trick compared to those who may have been enslaved under different circumstances is foolish. Everyone who is enslaved deserves freedom, no matter what the situation. I cannot end slavery on a global level right now, but i sincerely believe programs that address poverty will have a positive impact on lessening those enslaved.
If you want change, go get it.

  4. I think it is really important that you said the reason people are living in hunger is not because a shortage of food but because the food cannot be bought. I think there are many organizations today that focus on donating food to the poor which is not a bad things by any means, but there should be more focus on getting people jobs. There needs to be more focus on solving the problem rather than providing only temporary aid. I agree that world leaders must step up as well as the average citizen. We need to do away with the idea that one person can't change a big problem because when one believes this they lose the motivation to try. Although it is true that Biiftuu alone cannot fix the worlds poverty problem, but if everyone has the motivation to try then a solution is possible.

  5. Along with the food donations that organizations bring to those in need of it, they should educate them on the scary reality of trafficking in hope that it will help them make better choices when asked "Would you like a job?". I agree that there needs to be more long term aid given to these people, because temporary aid only solves problems temporarily. If these organizations could find a way to aid these people for longer periods of time, bringing them food, educating them, and helping them find stable jobs, I believe that those steps would be more like leaps towards a better tomorrow.

  6. What are some ways that we can push organizations and governments to move their butts so that the amount of aid is increased and the amount of poverty decreased in a relatively speedy manner? What do you think it would take for them to move in haste on behalf of the world's poor?

  7. I am really intrigued by your point about food. Firstly the statistic of hungry people is astonishing. And the point you made about there is enough food it just has to become more affordable is very true. But another important issue that goes along with affordable food is healthy food. Hunger is a bad problem but so is mal nutrition. In America it is more affordable to eat bad processed food then fresh and required food such as fruits and vegetables. I just wanted to point out this important fact that food is definitely needed in these impoverished places, but it also needs to be adequate food.
